Day Two – Cango Ostrich Farm

Cango Caves
The Cango Caves are situated 29km north of Oudtshoorn in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain Range. The caves are an extremely popular attraction for both foreign and local tourists. During high season, booking tours in advance is advisable.

Day Three – Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort

Depart Oudtshoorn on the N12 to De Rust, a Victorian town on the edge of the Little Karoo. At De Rust the road takes you through the impressive Meiringspoort gorge being 25km long and crossing the river 25 times and on to Klaarstroom. At the small village of Klaarstroom turn left onto the R407 to Prince Albert, an ideal lunch stop. From Prince Albert you back track to the turn off, taking the scenic drive over the Swartberg Pass and back to Oudtshoorn on the R328.  Originally hand built by prison labourers without the use of cement or heavy machinery, costing the government £40000 and opened in March 1886.  This tour may be driven in reverse order.

Arrive Port Elisabeth and Explore

The East London Museum is regarded as one of the best in the country and is home to the only known Dodo egg in existence.  There are a number of game reserves close to the city where one can view species such as lion and elephant.

There is a large selection of theatres, cinemas and restaurants to choose from when the sun goes down and the Bisho Casino is but a stone’s throw away.

Day four
Resume your tour along the N2 for 230km before reaching Mthatha. The drive will take you through rolling green hills dotted with small villages with colourful thatch Rondavels.  However, we strongly advise not to drive at night in the Ciskei as Cattle and other domestic farm animals will sometimes sleep on the warm roads.  This makes for a serious hazard.

This is Madiba country as the former president Nelson Mandela was born in the nearby village of Mvezo.  Qunu, just over 30km from the city is the childhood home of Madiba. The Nelson Mandela National Museum can be found in Mthatha. The city is regarded as the gateway to the resorts along the Wild Coast.

There are two possible routes to take from Mthatha. One could carry on along the N2 towards Kokstad or alternatively take the R61 to the coastal town of Port St Johns. This route is thought to be one of the most spectacular drives in the country.

Day Four
If you are leaving from Port St Johns travel inland on the R61 passing Lusikisiki and Flagstaff before linking up to the N2 near Kokstad. From Kokstad the road takes you to Port Shepstone on the Kwa Zulu Natal Dolphin Coast. The N2 continues along the coast.  The South Coast of Natal is famous as a holiday area.  You pass through many small towns Ramsgate, Margate and Amanzimtoti before arriving in Durban.

If you are ending your tour in Durban and flying out you can drop the car off at Durban King Shaka Airport.

Day One

Day Two
Depart Knysna for Plettenberg Bay approx 33 km. As you drive along the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay    you will pass the Knysna Elephant Sanctuary, Wolf sanctuary, Rapture sanctuary and various country shops that will draw your attention’ daily tours are offered.

This seaside town is only 33km from Knysna and is one of the most popular destinations for both local and overseas visitors. The town lies very close to the border between the Western and Eastern Cape provinces.

Birds of Eden
Situated a few kilometres east of Plettenberg Bay.  The Birds of Eden Sanctuary is the largest single span aviary in the world. The sanctuary covers an area of 2 hectares and is home to over 2000 birds.

Monkeyland
A must for the little ones as well as the (big ones) fun for the whole family.  The primate sanctuary offer guided tours and was created by the same people as Birds of Eden.

Tsitsikamma
Continuing on the N2 past Nature’s Valley one comes to The Tsitsikamma National Park, a forested area with an 80km coastline. The Storms River mouth, starting point for the Otter Trail, can be found in the park.  The Park is worth a visit where a short walk up along the river to the Pedestrian suspension bridges can be intriguing before return for lunch in their restaurant.

The Bloukrans Bridge on the Eastern Cape, Western Cape border is well known for being the highest bungee jump in the world, as stated in the Guinness Book of Records.  Even if you don’t take the plunge;  but only to observe, it is a heart stopping experience for most of us.

Addo Elephant Park

To appreciate the National Park we recommend a full day is for this wildlife experience.   The Park is situated 40km north of P.E. in the malaria-free Sundays River valley. Home to the Big 5, the park also boasts over 400 elephants.

The Kruger National Park admitted the first three tourist cars in 1927. The park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and is bigger than the state of Israel. Home to Africa’s Big Five, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino, the park is also home to hundreds of other mammal species. Birds such as eagles, vultures and storks are plentiful. It is advisable to bring along a good pair of binoculars and a zoom lens to capture unforgettable creatures in their natural habitat.

The park is ideal for self-drive safaris with the main routes all being tarred. There is a 50kmh speed limit on the tarred roads while the limit is 40kmh on the gravel roads. Should you encounter a group of animals, try to be as quite as possible so as not to disturb them. This will give you more time to observe them in their environment. The park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park linking to the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

Accommodation

When planning your trip remember that driving in the park at night is not permitted. Always ensure that the route you choose will give you enough time to reach your overnight accommodation before dark. The park has 21 rest camps to offer along with two private lodge concessions. Camping has become a favourite amongst many of the park’s visitors and requires no special permission within controlled camping areas.

Victoria Bay

Depart from George on the N2 south past Groot Brak River and on to Mossel Bay. This harbour town on the Southern Cape coast is best known for being the first landing place of Europeans on South African soil in 1488.

Bartholomew Dias Museum Complex
This museum complex is situated close to the town centre, just above the beautiful Santos Beach. The complex houses the Maritime Museum containing the Caravel ship that Bartholomew Dias arrived in from Portugal.  You will also find the Shell Museum and Aquarium. The oldest Post Office in South Africa, the Post Office Tree is located just outside the museum. Travellers would leave letters in a shoe under the tree from as long ago as 500 years.  Passing ships would collect and carry the mail to further destinations.

Travelling north of Durban

From your Umhlanga hotel you travel north along the N2 towards Richards Bay. This scenic route takes one along the Dolphin Coast.  So named due to frequent sightings of Bottlenose dolphins. Flanked by the Indian Ocean on one side and lush green sugarcane fields on the other, the road passes by a number of coastal resort towns. Ballito, Salt Rock, Shaka’s Rock and KwaDukuza-Stanger are but a few of the quaint Holiday Towns you will pass as you approach Richards Bay.

Richards Bay is South Africa’s largest harbour and is also one of the world’s biggest coal terminal. The town is widely regarded as the gateway to Zululand. Although Richards Bay is known primarily as an industrial town, it does offer visitors a variety of activities. There are a number of galleries, restaurants and bars in the town. Water sport enthusiasts will not be disappointed as activities such as surfing, swimming, deep sea fishing charters, and canoeing are all available.

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park can be found by continuing north for 75 km from Richards Bay. The park is the oldest reserve in Africa and is home to the Big 5. It is also world renowned for its white rhino conservation program. There is a wide variety of accommodation available in and around the park.

Day Two

Cross Swaziland Border

From Hluhluwe you continue along the N2 past Mkuze to the border post between South African and Swaziland. The South African border post called Golela and on the Swaziland side called Lavumisa.  Customs and Immigration with need to see your passport.  Once you are across the border the road becomes the MR11. The fully tarred road takes you along a scenic drive to the town of Big Bend and on to Manzini.

If one turns onto the MR8 after Big Bend you will find the Mkaya Game Reserve is famous for its Rhino herds.  The reserve offers refuge for animals faced with extinction. You will find unusual but interesting accommodation at Mkaya.  Here you can dine beneath the African stars, while tribal dancers dance to the beat of the African Drum.  After the excitement of the day you are ready to retire to your thatch roofed stone cottage for the night. Advance bookings are essential as you will be met at a communal location at a set time where you leave your car and transfer by 4×4 to the lodge. The overnight rates include all meals and guided activities.

From Mkaya lodge and onto Manzini, travel along the MR3 for 38km to Mbabane the capital city of the Kingdom of Swaziland. The city has many hotels, clubs and golf courses to offer visitors while there are craft markets and hot springs in the nearby Ezulwini Valley.  There is a artistic candle making factory, wood Carvers, Carpet makers and glass blowing factories in the area.  Time permitting, these crafts are well worth a visit.

Day One
Arrival in Durban

You fly into Durban’s King Shaka International Airport and collect your pre-booked cheap Car Hire. Travel south from the airport on the N2 for 36km to Durban, one of South Africa’s major tourist destinations.  We recommend you pre-book your accommodation with a sea view room for incredible views.   The famous Marine Parade situated between your hotel and the beach.  Durban Marine Parade where every sort entertainment is found irrespective of age.  Along the Parade your find an abundance of restaurants and Hot snack takeaway shops / carts to choose from.

uShaka Marine World is a massive theme park situated on the beachfront. The Marine park is divided into eight sections. This includes an aquarium, a snorkelling lagoon and the chance to cage dive with sharks.

The futuristic Moses Mabhida Stadium that was constructed for the Football World Cup boasts a panoramic viewing platform.  A large arch over the stadium with a small railway takes you up to the apex for great views.

Day Two

Depart from Durban on the N3 north freeway towards Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. From here the road takes you through the Natal Midlands, an area of farmlands linked by a number of quaint little towns. The region is well known for its arts and crafts trails.  Woollen items and designer candle made by the Zulus are sold from road side shops.

Northern Drakensberg

This impressive mountain range lies roughly halfway between Durban and Johannesburg. Its best known feature is the famous Amphitheatre where the mountains rise up a 1000m over a length of 5km.

The Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world, after Angel Falls in South America, drops off the escarpment in a series of five cascades. Many of the large number of caves found throughout the Drakensburg contain rock paintings.

This is the perfect area for some hiking and shopping at road side Zulu shops.  Candle, crafts and woollen products are fabulous & famous.

Day Three

Depart from the Drakensberg travelling north on the N3. The route takes you through the Free State and on to Gauteng. Johannesburg is 352km from Ladysmith and the drive takes approximately three and a half hours.
