You leave Port Elizabeth and travel east on the N2 towards Grahamstown. The Addo Elephant Park, home to the Big 5 and over 400 elephants is situated only 40 km north Port Elizabeth, should you wish to visit the wildlife we would recommend you reserve at least half a day. Continuing your journey along the N2 for another 80 km, you will reach the town of Grahamstown, home to Rhodes University and the host town for the annual National Arts Festival.
The drive from Grahamstown through to East London takes you through the area known as Frontier Country, one of the most diverse ecological regions in South Africa.
The approximate distance between Port Elizabeth and East London is 285 km.

Day Three
East London
Places of interest in East London
This coastal city on the Eastern Cape’s Sunshine Coast is the only river port in South Africa.
The city boasts some of the finest beaches in the world with Nahoon Reef being an international surfing destination.
The East London Museum is regarded as one of the best in the country and is home to the only known Dodo egg in existence. There are a number of game reserves close to the city where one can view species such as lion and elephant.
There is a large selection of theatres, cinemas and restaurants to choose from when the sun goes down and the Bisho Casino is but a stone’s throw away.
Overnight in East London
Day four
Resume your tour along the N2 for 230km before reaching Mthatha. The drive will take you through rolling green hills dotted with small villages with colourful thatch Rondavels. However, we strongly advise not to drive at night in the Ciskei as Cattle and other domestic farm animals will sometimes sleep on the warm roads. This makes for a serious hazard.
Town of Mthatha
This is Madiba country as the former president Nelson Mandela was born in the nearby village of Mvezo. Qunu, just over 30km from the city is the childhood home of Madiba. The Nelson Mandela National Museum can be found in Mthatha. The city is regarded as the gateway to the resorts along the Wild Coast.
There are two possible routes to take from Mthatha. One could carry on along the N2 towards Kokstad or alternatively take the R61 to the coastal town of Port St Johns. This route is thought to be one of the most spectacular drives in the country.
Overnight Port St Johns or Kokstad
Day Four
If you are leaving from Port St Johns travel inland on the R61 passing Lusikisiki and Flagstaff before linking up to the N2 near Kokstad. From Kokstad the road takes you to Port Shepstone on the Kwa Zulu Natal Dolphin Coast. The N2 continues along the coast. The South Coast of Natal is famous as a holiday area. You pass through many small towns Ramsgate, Margate and Amanzimtoti before arriving in Durban.
Overnight Durban
Day Five
If you are ending your tour in Durban and flying out you can drop the car off at Durban King Shaka Airport.
The above is a basic tour idea leaving you to fill it out with extra days here and there. The wildlife is great in Addo and is a Malaria free area. Most of the beaches are also ‘Blue flag’ So its freedom & fun all the way.
