The Town of George

Day One – You fly into George and collect your pre-booked Car Hire.  George is known as the capital of the Garden Route and is situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The city, was first proclaimed a town in 1811.  George has the scenic, towering Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop and is the perfect starting point for your self-drive tour.

Day Two – Cango Ostrich Farm
Cango Ostrich Show Farm lies 14km north of Oudtshoorn, on your right, en route to the Cango Caves. The farm gives visitors an informative and fun-filled 45 min guided tour. You will get to hand feed the ostriches; sit on them and for the more adventurous, ride them!  If you wish to enjoy a short Ostrich ride you must weigh less than 75 kgs and be there before 11am after which it becomes too hot and exhausting for the ostrich to be ridden.  Tours depart every 20 min.

Cango Caves
The Cango Caves are situated 29km north of Oudtshoorn in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain Range. The caves are an extremely popular attraction for both foreign and local tourists. During high season, booking tours in advance is advisable.

Cango Wildlife Ranch
The Cango Wildlife Ranch is only 3km north of Oudtshoorn. The ranch is home to over 90 species of animals including Cheetahs, Leopard, Lions and Bengal tigers, Crocodiles and the like. Visitors have the opportunity to be photographed touching a cheetah as well as the chance to cage dive with crocodiles!

Day Three – Swartberg Pass and Meiringspoort

Depart Oudtshoorn on the N12 to De Rust, a Victorian town on the edge of the Little Karoo. At De Rust the road takes you through the impressive Meiringspoort gorge being 25km long and crossing the river 25 times and on to Klaarstroom. At the small village of Klaarstroom turn left onto the R407 to Prince Albert, an ideal lunch stop. From Prince Albert you back track to the turn off, taking the scenic drive over the Swartberg Pass and back to Oudtshoorn on the R328.  Originally hand built by prison labourers without the use of cement or heavy machinery, costing the government £40000 and opened in March 1886.  This tour may be driven in reverse order.

Day Four – Further Optional tours from Oudtshoorn

Return To George and depart on your flight home out of George Airport.
For a more extended tour one might choose to travel along the Garden Route, through Knysna and the Tsitikamma forest and onto the capital of the Eastern Cape, Port Elizabeth. Visit the Addo Elephant Park before returning to Port Elizabeth Airport. Another option would be to travel to Cape Town via Mossel Bay and the Overberg region.
Lastly, fly out of George onto the Kruger National Park or the warm beaches of Durban

There are 254 known cultural heritage sites in the Kruger, including 130 rock art sites. Day One

Either you will fly or drive from Johannesburg or continue from Swaziland north to Kruger Park.
Leave Swaziland through the Jeppes Reef border post. Travel for just over 41km on the R570 before entering the Kruger National Park at Malelane in the South.  We suggest travelling slowly north staying at various camps to avoid having to back track.

The Kruger National Park admitted the first three tourist cars in 1927. The park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa and is bigger than the state of Israel. Home to Africa’s Big Five, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino, the park is also home to hundreds of other mammal species. Birds such as eagles, vultures and storks are plentiful. It is advisable to bring along a good pair of binoculars and a zoom lens to capture unforgettable creatures in their natural habitat.

The park is ideal for self-drive safaris with the main routes all being tarred. There is a 50kmh speed limit on the tarred roads while the limit is 40kmh on the gravel roads. Should you encounter a group of animals, try to be as quite as possible so as not to disturb them. This will give you more time to observe them in their environment. The park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park linking to the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.

Accommodation

When planning your trip remember that driving in the park at night is not permitted. Always ensure that the route you choose will give you enough time to reach your overnight accommodation before dark. The park has 21 rest camps to offer along with two private lodge concessions. Camping has become a favourite amongst many of the park’s visitors and requires no special permission within controlled camping areas.

In the area are a large variety of private game lodges bordering the Kruger Park.

Arrival in Durban

Day Two

Depart from Durban on the N3 north freeway towards Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. From here the road takes you through the Natal Midlands, an area of farmlands linked by a number of quaint little towns. The region is well known for its arts and crafts trails.  Woollen items and designer candle made by the Zulus are sold from road side shops.

Northern Drakensberg

This impressive mountain range lies roughly halfway between Durban and Johannesburg. Its best known feature is the famous Amphitheatre where the mountains rise up a 1000m over a length of 5km.

The Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world, after Angel Falls in South America, drops off the escarpment in a series of five cascades. Many of the large number of caves found throughout the Drakensburg contain rock paintings.

This is the perfect area for some hiking and shopping at road side Zulu shops.  Candle, crafts and woollen products are fabulous & famous.
