The founding of George
Known as the capital of the South Western Cape, George was founded in 1811 and is the sixth oldest settlement in South Africa. The city is home to a number of golf courses including the Fancourt Golf Estate which often hosts major international tournaments. There are several museums to be found, most noteworthy being the Outeniqua Transport Museum and the George Museum. The beaches of Victoria Bay to the east of George and Herolds Bay to the west are popular resorts.
